eyeos 1.9 Preview released!

After quite some time, we are very happy to announce the preview release of eyeos 1.9 “Mars”, which is the result of months of work from the eyeos team and eyeos community on both the eyeos platform and case applications.

Attention, testers:
There are still several days before the final release of 1.9, so a bit of community testing would be greatly appreciated! Now is the most crucial time to report bugs (which can be done via the official Bug Reporter). The official Release Notes for the 1.9 Preview can be found here.

Test it!

As we have with previous preview releases, an official “testing” server has been made available for the public. Please use it only for testing 1.9, as it’ll be removed when the official release has been made available:
Preview server: http://preview.eyeos.org/ (soon!)

This is nice to see that even if the “core team” is working (hard) only on the future 2.0 version, we have great community members that work hard on their side to provide again and again improved 1.x versions!

Great work to you all! And congrats for the new baby :)

  3. This update comes with some realy great features, I like the concept of the eyeDock but it looks so extremely awful, remove the glossy thing in the whole theme. Also I think that the stars next to the eyeDock items should be removed, rightclick works awesome enough.

    Some bugs I noticed yet:
    - eyeNav :: If selecting URL and draging mouse down while holding down button, text moves up so its unreadable
    - the new game (how is it called again??) :: doesnt scale I have a darn small screen at my netbook and its to small for the app to fit correctly (even f11 doesnt fix the problem)
    - if you chose to update an older version of eyeOS (for me 1.8.7.1) the root accaunt (didnt test any other old accaunts) wont work correctly anymore. Deleting everything at autostart and adding eyeDock should’ve fixed my problem but it didnt.

Overal this update brings some great features with it (like the new calc), but I won’t use this untill you made it less glossy and remove all the crap stuff around it (like the stars in the eyeDock).

PS: Anybody knows some way to have the upper bar act like 1.9 in 1.8.7.1 (so that it will always be on top)

Many people that use eyeOS complain that there is no way to reset password if they forget their password. This poses as a security problem since the registration is not reliant on email address; so there is not way to confirm that the user who is asking hoster for a reset is really who they say they are. I think there should be a function that asks users to confirm by email and that be the bases of reseting password etc.

A little disappointed by the themes strategy…

Why removing LightDesk which was highly usable and ergonomic and replacing it by these eyes catching, flashy (but a little bit kiddy and ridiculous) Themes.

Whereas eyeOS 2.0 clearly took the right direction with a clean, professional new theme, eyeOS 1.X seems to forget the professional people using it to go to the teenager community (one of the main “new” features is a new game…).

Please remeber that to do adopted by professionals, eyeOS needs to look professional…

  6. Hi Alex.

I just sorted the release notes alphabetically. I’ll take more care for the final release. Thanks for the info!

About the themes: For eyeos 1.9 most parts of the themes need to be rewritten. That’s why eyeLightDesk got removed, because we don’t use it. If you need it, just create a bug report and I’ll work at it. Good to know!

    Best regards,
    Lars

@kain i agree and it look like it will be done for 1.9.1 if not sooner ;)

@Alex sorry if it seems that a main “new” features is a new game… it is not at all just a few things i would say is a new eyeDock-ing system that you can modify to look almost anyway you want easily. looking it the code it seems that with some more work we can even have docks on the sides and remove the N/S and so on but there is alot more even small things in sounding but are not like having compressed code now for the first time adding eyeShow a better way of viewing installed apps with a re done eyeApps and If a window is resizable and higher than the current screen resolution it is resized now that is good for netbook users +. and the list keeps going even small things like we made all apps point to a real icon locational instead so no app uses the image_alias.eyecode (hope for small improvement in speed) more Release Notes

About the theme. first that was all me. 1. I am vary happy and worked hard that all apps look more alike now so it will not seem like we just add some apps from all over the place and just added it to eyeos. realy the theme is not that much different I was going for a cloud theme. with every os x and sites out there upgrading there look i(even usa government sites are getting flashy) i dont see this changes in a bad light. And i made sure that if i added more img to one thing that i deleted other imgs to keep the load time and down and speed up and after i found the right why of compressing the .pngs a few months ago that i could add more flashyness and still come under size then what 1.8.7.0 or older was

but i agree and that we should have a pro clean theme and i have a great one that i started! so the by 1.9.1 if not sooner i will add it and take out air or oxygen or both and put them in the app store place thingy :)

    Best regards,
    matt

    p.s. sorry for ranting …. :p

you know i have some dissapointments with eyeOs 2.0, that’s because of that strange Js Framework, much more interesting to do this project using Jquery UI for example, i think.
