Inaugurating the first Free Software street

The Free Software conferences held in Berga during the last weekend, where eyeOS participated with a conference and a workshop, ended with a very special moment: The official inauguration of the first “Free Software” street in the world.

Richard Stallman, founder of GNU Project and Free Software Foundation, was invited and after speaking, officially inaugurated the street.

As you already know, Free Software is as easy to explain as “software that respects our freedom”. Free software is designed to free the user from restrictions put in place by proprietary software, and so using free software lets you join a global community of people who are making the political and ethical assertion of our rights to learn and to share what we learn with others.

From the eyeOS project, we understand this inauguration as a symbol, representing that Free Software can be on the street too. We should move, all together, to promote it.

From this post, we’d also like to invite Microsoft or Google to move their headquarters’ official address to the Free Software street ;-)

Together is better!

You could add this information and the picture above to Wikipedia. It will probably become the Home Page’s Did you know… one day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berga

  5. This street wasn’t on OpenStreetMap yet, so I added it based on the coordinates given in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Software_Street – you can see it in OpenStreetMap here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=66753103
