We are very glad to announce the immediate availability of eyeOS 2.2, the first 2.x version marked as Stable. With this release we conclude a path started one year ago with the 2.0 announcement, but this release is not just important because of the stability: eyeOS will be celebrating its 5th birthday on August 1st..

The main new features of eyeOS 2.2 are the complete compatibility with all modern browsers (IE 7.x and newer, Firefox , Safari…),a huge improvement on the eyeOS overall speed and the new eyeOS Official Installer that will allow everyone to install an eyeOS server much more easily than before.

What’s new?

The installer

http://xxx.yoururl.xxx/eyeOS/install

Follow the instructions. If you have some System requirements not acomplished on your server, please take a look at Installation Manual to know how install and configure them.

From tomorrow (26-31 July) we will be at Campus Party Valencia 2010 (Valencia, Spain). eyeOS, as a big example of innovation, has been chosen another time as coordinator of the innovation area. For one week we are going to demonstrate that software is one of the biggest and most competitive markets of the moment; and, as such, one which needs bigger doses of innovation and collective intelligence.

This Campus Party will have the first eyeOS 2.x Workshop, where we will explain how to create applications for eyeOS 2.x. During the Campus we will also present documentation and other intersting tools to help you, our community, to develop, translate and spread eyeOS around the World. The eyeOS Workshop will be this next Wednesday 28th July at 4:00 p.m. at Innovation Area.

Steve Wozniak, Apple’s cofounder or Olivero Toscani, photograph, will be some of the people with whom we will share our knowledge and discuss and explore interesting themes such as software development and it applications.

Campus Party is recognized as the biggest electronic entertainment event on-line in the world. An annual event that brings together thousands of participants with their computers from all over the world in order to share their concerns and experiences and carry out a whole range of different activities related to computers, communications and new technologies.

See you in Valencia!

Since the eyeOs 2.x release you have been asking us to fix problems related with the eyeOS 2.x speed. In this way we have been working to improve it. The main changes are:

Some components, necessary to run, for example, the documents application, are loaded on the background

The cache system has been enabled to avoid to repeat the load of components which are not changing while the user is working on eyeOS

The petitions are done directly to the Apache without use PHP

Fixed some little bugs on the User Search Tool

Improved the export option at Documents app

We would really appreciate any testing regarding the loading speed in eyeOS 2 from now on!

Download and use eyeOS 2.1.2 Beta

The new version can be downloaded from the downloads page and used from the beta server, which has already been updated.

The Free Software conferences held in Berga during the last weekend, where eyeOS participated with a conference and a workshop, ended with a very special moment: The official inauguration of the first “Free Software” street in the world.

Richard Stallman, founder of GNU Project and Free Software Foundation, was invited and after speaking, officially inaugurated the street.

As you already know, Free Software is as easy to explain as “software that respects our freedom”. Free software is designed to free the user from restrictions put in place by proprietary software, and so using free software lets you join a global community of people who are making the political and ethical assertion of our rights to learn and to share what we learn with others.

From the eyeOS project, we understand this inauguration as a symbol, representing that Free Software can be on the street too. We should move, all together, to promote it.

From this post, we’d also like to invite Microsoft or Google to move their headquarters’ official address to the Free Software street

Together is better!

On the last eyeOS release we published a new feature: the possibility to authenticate an eyeOS user from a webpage. We’d like to explain in this post how to do this.

Code

Is not necessary to know a lot of HTML to allow your eyeOS to be accessible from a web. You only have to add this code:

<form action=”http://your_eyeos_server.org/index.php?externLogin=1″ method=”POST” id=”myForm”>
<input name=”username” type=”text” id=”username” value=”User…” />
<input name=”password” type=”password” id=”password” value=”Password…” />
<input name=”submit” type=”submit” id=”submit” value=”Enter!”>
</form>

Note that the first line has to include your eyeOS URL (on the demo http://your_eyeos_server.org) finished with /index.php?externLogin=1

Try it!

In order to show you how it works we have created this simple form to acces from this post to the eyeOS 2.x Demo. Enjoy it!

It’s no longer necessary to access an eyeOS login page to log into the system. Just do it from your own website or blog.

Stay tuned for more news!

We’re glad to announce the immediate availability of eyeOS 2.1 which is an important step on the eyeOS 2.x stabilization process. This new version is a huge step on this process, and it finally includes a much more stable, real time collaboratively word processor, and much more!

What’s new?

The main new features are:

Simultaneous Collaboration in Real Time

One of the most interesting features that eyeOS 2.x introduced in its presentation is finally available in this version: the simultaneous collaboration between different users in real, real time. It’s now possible to edit a document with other users at the same time. And how does it work? It’s really easy! You have to share a document with another contact through eyeFiles and just open it and start working! When the users with edit permissions for that document open it you will see them inside the doc.

Real Time Updates

When you have a new event (e.g. A file shared with you or a friendship request), the notifications system will inform you of that new event in real time. It’s not necessary to refresh the widget to notice new notifications.

Authentication from a webpage

This release includes the possibility to authenticate an eyeOS user from a webpage. Now, if you want, it’s no longer necessary to access an eyeOS login page to log into the system. Just do it from your own website or blog!

New User Settings Application

The user settings panel has been updated in this version. With eyeOS 2.1 you can change the desktop mode (classic or dashboard), select the number of columns for your widgets, insert a photo as wallpaper or select your language. The interfice is much more easy to use now!

New User Manager (Administration Tool)

Another important new feature in this release is the possibility to allow the administrator of the system to manage the eyeOS users and groups of his/her server. With this new app you will be able to edit, create and delete accounts, groups members, manage permisions…

Classic Desktop

We know that one of the most important points of eyeOS 2.x was the new desktop organization. For certain uses, however, a classic desktop can be better, even not taking profit of some advantages of being an Internet based desktop. After the requirement of some of you we have developed the possibility to have a classic desktop on the eyeOS 2.x branch. Note that is a first version and you only can add files there, but it will be improved on next releases.

Documents Application Improved

The Documents application is much more stable now and very near to reach a final state. We have fixed a lot of bugs and now is possible to work with the application and create, save and open documents. You can also export to different formats as HTML, PDF, OpenOffice (ODT), RTF, TXT and DOC. The other key feature included is the collaborative mode explained before.

Translations

eyeOS 2.1 Beta is directly available in 28 languages thanks to the great worldwide eyeOS community: English, Catalan, Spanish, Bulgarian, Slovak, Portuguese-european, Portuguese-brazilian, German, Swedish, French, Japanese, Vietnamese, Bengali, Polish, Arabic, Lithuanian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Suomi, Hungarian, Serbian, Romanian, Indonesian, Russian, Bengali, Norwegian, Persian and Italian.

To select a language, please, go to Settings → Configuration and select your language. Then just log out and log in again to have eyeOS in your selected language.

Start translating on eyeOS is not difficult. You only need to visit The Translation Server and register with a new username. Then send an email to translate@eyeos.org with your credentials (name, surname, username and translation language) and we will give you the permissions to start translating eyeOS into your language. In case that there is already an existing translation for that language you will be invited to join the translation group for that language.

Download and use eyeOS 2.1 Beta

The new version can be downloaded from the downloads page and used from the preview server, which has already been updated.

It’s important to say that day by day eyeOs has more capabilites. This is important because the installation has more steps and it could be difficult for some of you. If you have problems, please, visit the official forum, or if you want no problems, use our Professional Services.

Important: Please, take a look at the Installation instructions to install eyeOS 2.1 Beta without problems!

Please remember that while the system is stable now, the base apps must be seen as beta status and testing is really important right now. To report bugs and wishes please use the SourceForge tracker.

Updating an existent version of eyeOS 2.1

To update eyeOS 2.0.x Beta to eyeOS 2.1 Beta please follow the instructions below. Note that an automatic installer/updater will be added to eyeOS 2.x on future releases.

Instructions

To update your installed 2.x eyeOS, you have to follow this three steps:

1.- Download the update package here
2.- Unpack the downloaded file.
3.- Upload the files in your server (with FTP or another via), overwriting old files.

Develop on eyeOS 2.1 Beta

You can download and read the 2.0 Development manual abstract to learn how to create applications for eyeOS 2.0 Beta. The manual can be downloaded here.

We have opened a new public SVN server so you can track and follow all the development of eyeOS 2.x. The SVN server is located at https://code.eyeos.org/trunk .

If you have questions about eyeOS 2.x developement, please, ask us on eyeOS forums!

Thanks to all the collaborators and translators that have worked on this release and stay tuned for next releases!

During the last months we’ve been focused on eyeOS 2.x. However, the support for eyeOS 1.x has not ended and there are thousands of alive 1.x servers around the world. Some community members are still working on the 1.x branch fixing bugs and creating new documentation. We’re happy to present the new User Manual created by Pascal Lebas, Sable, from the eyeOS french community.

There are two versions which will be maintained separately. Sable realized that information concerning administrators is not useful for an end user, who needs a lightest manual. The two available versions are:

Version 1.10.4a, for eyeOS administartors

Version 1.10.4u, for eyeOS end users

Version numbers

On the version numbers, you can check which version is your manual with some easy help:

The first digit corresponds to the branch (version) of eyeOS (eyeOS 2 manuals will begin with “2″)

The second number represents the edition year (here, “10″ for 2010)

The third digit is the month when the manual was written(here, “4″ for April)

The last letter identifies the version, it is: “a” for administrator and “u” for user

Downloads

In order to facilitate the use of this manuals we want to give you the possibility to download the manual in different formats: pdf, epub and digital publication.

We are glad to present e-Dibam, the first e-government platform deployed by eyeOS for the Barcelona Provincial Council which will used for more than 170 councils in Catalonia. The platform allows the users to work on the cloud using content management systems, documental management, procedures and web integred services.

The pilot program has already started on 20 councils and will last until December 2011. As the deputy delegate for the knowledge society of the Provincial Council, Ezequiel Martinez, explained on the presentation, “the Council gives to this project, a determined step towards e-government in the municipalities of Barcelona and promotes the modernization of local councils”. In fact “the challenge is to change the mentality of people,” ventured Martinez. This project can be an historical and pioneer event in Spain in local government: that all procedures can be made via the Internet.

With e-Dibam, eyeOS is placed as a reference and trend technological modernization on the public administration sector in Catalonia and throughout Spain. And this is thanks to create an Open Source technology which is starting to grow in different markets, also in public administrations.

We are very happy to share with you the BDigital Award (Digital Innovation category) that we received this morning for the eyeOS 2.0 innovation and future possibilities. This award represents the hard work done during the last year, which will end with the publication of the final version of eyeOS 2.0. It’s not easy to create software from scartch, even less if you create Open Source and even less if you compete with some giants.

The purpose of the BDigital Award for Digital Innovation is fostering innovative ideas and projects with a clear technological application, based upon results generated at companies, technological centres and universities, and innovative products and services, developed or under development, designed for encouraging an industrial use of the results and/or technology generated within the society of information and the digital world.

We want (once again) to thanks all the commnuity for it’s effort, and as usual we want to share the award with all the community. This time we’ll do this in a very special way we’ll be announcing soon. Thank you!

Since the initial eyeOS 2.0 release we have been translating the system almost string by string. All the eyeOS community members have been working hard and thanks to that eyeOS is today available in 19 languages. Today we are very glad to present the new translation system.

How does it work?

As you can see on the screenshot the new Translation System usage is easy: on the left side there’s a list with all the applications and other translatable parts. Each one has a color code next to it: Green means that the translation is completed for that specific part. Yellow means that some strings are translated but there is still some work to be done, and Red means that all the strings need to be translated yet.

How can I start translating eyeOS into my language?

Start translating on eyeOS is not difficult. You only need to visit The Translation Server and register with a new username. Then send an email to translate@eyeos.org with your credentials (name, surname, username and translation language) and we will give you the permissions to start translating eyeOS into your language. In case that there is already an existing translation for that language you will be invited to join the translation group for that language.

eyeOS needs more languages!

Today eyeOS 2.x is available in 19 languages: English, Spanish, Bulgarian, Slovak, Portuguese-european, Catalan, Portuguese-brazilian, German, Swedish, French, Japanese, Vietnamese, Bengali, Polish, Arabic, Lithuanian, Thai, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.

19 languages are many but there are still dozens of uncovered langauges in eyeOS. If your language is not in the list please consider start translating eyeOS today to your language.

During the last year we have been working very hard on eyeOS 2.0. From the first days of eyeos 1.0 we all knew that eyeos 2.0 would not be just a simple evolution of eyeos 1.x with a new theme. We wanted 2.0 to be something totally new, from scratch: a new desktop metaphor, new base apps, and especially a new way to work. And on March we have released the first Beta version. Now we are still developing to have a complete and stable eyeOS.

On this moment we have a stable base and we think that is a good moment to show you the eyeOS 2.x Roadmap. Note that this releases are scheduled from today (April 27th, 2010) to January 1st, 2011.

But, this is definitive?

As you know a Roadmap is a guide but it’s possible that it will change. The cirumstances can force us to make small changes. As an Open source project the main source of income comes from our costumers. If one of them wants a feature and he invests on it we will modify the Roadmap and this feature will be able for all of you earlier.

If you want to collaborate on develop some app for eyeOS 2.X, please, contact us on team@eyeos.org and we will give you some proposals!

Stay tuned!

From today to next Sunday (14-18 April) we will be at Campus Party Europe 2010 (Madrid, Spain). eyeOs, as a big example of innovation, has been chosen as coordinator of the innovation area. For four days we are going to demonstrate that software is one of the biggest and most competitive markets of the moment; and, as such, one which needs bigger doses of innovation and collective intelligence.

Rasmus Lerdorf, known world wide as the first creator of PHP language, or Karlheinz Brandenburg, known for his major contributions to the development of MP3, the compression algorithm that has changed the history of music, will be some of the people with whom we will share our knowledge and discuss and explore interesting themes such as software development and it applications.

The event, which will take place in Madrid (Spain), will be the biggest concentration of digital talent that has ever been brought together in Europe. For four days, 800 young people from each of the 27 member states of the EU will participate in activities such as conferences, workshops and challenges centered around three knowledge areas: Science, Digital Creativity and Innovation.

Campus Party is recognized as the biggest electronic entertainment event on-line in the world. An annual event that brings together thousands of participants with their computers from all over the world in order to share their concerns and experiences and carry out a whole range of different activities related to computers, communications and new technologies.

See you in Madrid!
